RFID : Connecting your car tires to a global Ecosystem
Global Tire manufacturers are piloting and deploying UHF RFID technology as part of a global initiative to track every individual tire from the point of manufacture to disposal.
UHF RFID tagging of tires is replacing traditional barcode and human readable tire identification with fast, accurate, wireless scanning that will provide digital data part numbers and record details like manufacturer, size, and where and when each tire was built.
Early-adopter tire manufacturers, such as Michelin and Bridgestone, are now working to share access to individual tire data between manufacturers by creating the Global Data Service Organization for Tires and Automotive Components (GDSO), a not for profit to standardise data relating to tires across manufacturers.
Why RFID Tag tires...
Car manufacturers can wirelessly scan the tires built-in tags to confirm the right tires are being installed on each new vehicle throughout the production lines, and to create a proper association between tires and the vehicle.
Traditional Tire distributor or dealer environments will be able to use RFID to reduce the huge inventory challenges inventory of managing hundreds of tires that look the same but comprise many distinct types and sizes. Additionally, they can now track a tires maintenance and usage data independent of the vehicle it was fitted to.
Why RFID for tires...
1. UHF RFID is Universal tech with a single standards-body, RAIN
2. Permanently embedded and readable, even while the vehicle is moving
3. Remains in Readable during entire lifecycle of the tire
4. Secure - data on tag can be locked after writing for traceability.
5. ISO Tire industry Standard describe RFID usage for the tire industry
