Continuous improvement in one word - article by Jeff Pollock Idencia CEO.
I've had the good fortune to spend a lot of time recently with an old college friend whose story provides a good lesson for creating a system of continuous improvement.
When asked about his success based on the lessons of his life, he will answer in one word.
Discipline.
This means careful, intentional planning; dedication to process; attention to details; and a careful analysis of results.
Discipline.
Maintaining discipline can be hard for a host of reasons, not the least of which is we have too much to do these days.
This is one of the reasons why software has become so prominent. is that it can automate the little things that challenge adherence to discipline problematic.
Let's take quality control, for instance.
If you have a rigorous manufacturing process that requires detailed inspections, careful data logging and accurate reporting, there are a number of tasks that require disciplined execution.
If you automate, you reduce the number of these tasks.
So, if you move from manually preparing reports (with data collected on a clipboard) to collecting data on a smart device so that reports can be automatically generated, you improve discipline in two ways:
1) Your reports will be more accurate and never late; and
2) Removing one activity requiring human discipline frees more capacity to remain disciplined in areas that cannot be automated.
If you want to continuously improve your plant operations, I hope you will give us a call to learn about our tool for automating reporting and data collection.
Our mission is to help construction product manufacturers achieve full potential. Let's talk!
